Wondering if there’s a better method for how to read your textbooks? There is – and I am going to teach you!
I never fully understood how professors expected you to read 8 chapters before the next class.
That never stopped me from trying though. And every time, I would make it about half way before giving up and taking a nap instead.
College textbooks are awful, there is way too much information and EVERYTHING is important so you want to sit there and read every single word, right?
WRONG. Textbooks are actually filled with a crap ton of fluff to make whoever wrote it appear more intellectual or maybe there is some rule about how big textbooks actually have to be.
Either way the fact is you do not have to read every word to get the big picture and key point from the chapter.
In fact, if you use the strategy I explain in the video below, you won’t ever have to read an entire chapter EVER AGAIN. I swear!
How to Read Your Textbooks
you need a contact page or contact info on your site. email me.
Thanks! I am actually having my website redone and I will make sure I have a contact page on it.
i think it makes sense, and definately gonna try it
Stephanie, let me know how it worked for you
Hey Clarissa,
I just wanted to thank you for making all the study help videos, I am in my first year of uni and second semester is a lot harder and all of your videos are immensely helpful. I am going to try this way of reading things as we get tons of reading, especially for neuroscience and stats and it usually takes me ages. Thank you so much!!
Leonie, you are very welcome. I am so glad my videos are helping you in Uni (I love how you guys in Europe call it that it so chic). Let me know how the reading strategies work out for you, especially in neuroscience.
I try and do as you suggest in your video and in my program it really does work! I just need to get back on track & continue doing it.
thanks!
You are so welcome Jenn! I am so happy to hear that it is working for you.
Hi Clarissa, do you take notes at all while reading, or just read the info. Thats what makes reading textbooks so dreadful, the amount of time it will take to takes notes on the assigned chapters. I feel like writing to key info I read helps me process the info and stay focused. Thanks for this info!
Hi Jenn, Yes I absolutely write notes but not as I am reading. The mistake that students make is that they try to write and read at the same time. I’ve found that reading a section first without highlighting or taking notes helps you really focus on just learning the information. Then once I am done with that section I ask myself out loud, what was this section about? What were the main points, ideas, key definitions? That summary is what I write in my notes in my own words. Not copied word for word from the book.
