It’s that time of year where we’re thinking about our goals and making a plan towards achieving them. Let’s dive into goal setting for college students and 5 questions to ask yourself before you set goals for 2018.
If you’ve already written your goals for the new year, I’m going to give you a reason to scrap them and start all over.
Not because the goals you chose sucked but because if you didn’t ask yourself these 5 important questions before you picked them, you’re going to find yourself feeling unfilled and lost at the end of the year.
Goal Setting For College Students: 5 Questions To Ask Yourself
Question 1: This past year did I experience times where I didn’t feel the way I wanted to feel in my life, what situations and experiences caused those feelings?
I see a lot of students setting random goals for themselves because it’s what other people expect of them, what you’re supposed to do or because they don’t know what they want.
This is the quickest way to find yourself living a life you hate.
Questions like this one help us identify what we don’t want to repeat in the new year and provide us with contrast to identify what we might want.
Question 2: This past year did I experience and times where I did feel the way I wanted to feel in my life, what situations and experiences caused those feelings?
Now we’re getting a better idea of things, people, situations and life experiences that bring us joy and that we might want to potentially create goals around.
Question 3: What do I want to be, do and have this next year?
Here’s where I want you to dream without judgment write down everything you want to experience and accomplish over the next year. Notice what happens when there is no judgment, the things you write down change. This can give you some insight into the things you truly value.
Question 4: If I were to experience all of these things how would it change me and everything else that’s a part of my life.
How will achieving these things change who you are mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, financially, and academically? How different would your life be? What opportunities would it help create for you?
Question 5: The most powerful out of all the questions. Who do I need to become to make all of these things happen?
What would you have to believe? What thoughts would you have to think?, What habits would you have to create, who would you need to hang around with, what skills would you have to learn?
These are the same 5 questions I’ve been asking myself for the past 3 years and I compiled them from diff mentors from afar like, Danielle Laporte, Chalene Johnson, Tony Robbins, Oprah. They’re designed to help you reflect and get to know yourself a bit better so you can pick goals that will help you experience your most incredible year yet.
