The number one thing that we wish we had more off as college students is time. If all we have is 24 hours in a day, how do we create more free time in college to engage in activities that build our character and people skills?

The only way that you can have more time for you is to let go of things that are not serving you and your goals in college. One of the easiest ways that you can do this is by outsourcing.

Outsourcing is a term that is used a lot in the online business world but all it is, is taking a task that you would normally do and handing it off to someone else to take care of it for you.

In this week’s Soulful Studies Sunday I am going to be sharing some of the things you can outsource as a student.

WARNING: This concept of outsourcing is not for those college girls who are not willing to invest in themselves and who are not working while they are in college. This is for the college girl who was like me and worked part-time or full-time while they go to school.

#1 Laundry

A lot of the laundry mats have a drop off service. Every two weeks you can drop off your clothes to be washed, dried and folded for you. The cost depends on the pounds of clothes you bring but in my case I never spent more than $30 for the whole month.

#2 Research and Editing of Papers

I promise you outsourcing this part of the paper writing process will not get you kicked out of college. In fact, that is the main reason why research librarians, professors and the writing center exist on college campuses. You can bring your topic to the research librarian and she will use her magic to find resources relevant to your paper. You can then use the bibliography of those articles she found for you as additional resources.

If you are smart, you will write the outline and first draft of your paper early. This will give you time to hand it over to your professor or the writing center to do the editing and restructuring for you.  Which will save you about 1-2 hours that you can spend studying for another class. You can watch my paper writing process here and extended it out over 5-7 weeks instead of 7 days.

#3 Grocery Shopping + Meal Planning

Many grocery stores now have the option of dropping off your groceries straight to your door. My best friend uses Stop n Shop’s Peapod service.  All you have to do is create your grocery list online and someone from the Stop n Shop store will collect all your items and drop them off at your door.

Once you have the groceries in your home, you can use a meal plan like Tone It Up’s to take the guess work out of coming up with meals and snacks for the week.  This will create brain power and time that you can use towards reading, studying or paper writing.

#4 Cleaning

Depending on how much of a neat freak you are cleaning your apartment can take anywhere from one hour to a whole day. Time which can be spent volunteering and networking, studying or hanging out with some friends to decompress.  What you can do is once a month, you have someone come and clean your apartment from top to bottom and then the remaining time you can use my 10 minute cleaning routine to keep the place nice and tidy.

Even though many of these outsourcing activities require you to invest in yourself, the time it will save you is well worth it. Because with this extra time you can ensure you get the grades you’re working so hard for in college and have the extra time to become a well rounded student that future employers will gush over.
